COLUMBIA, Mo. – A monster winter storm bigger than some Midwest cities have seen in years slogged toward the nation's midsection Monday as the region geared up its defenses against a potentially deadly mix of sleet, snow and ice that could affect a third of the nation.
While record snowfalls have pounded the Northeast in what's shaping up to be one of that region's most brutal winters, the Midwest has been comparatively unscathed. Not this time: Up to two feet of snow was forecast for some cities, and the storm was expected to carve a frigid path from Colorado to New England by week's end. Thunderstorms and tornadoes were possible further south.
Patrons lined up by 7 a.m. Monday outside Edele and Mertz Hardware just a few blocks from the Anheuser-Busch brewery in St. Louis, waiting for the store to open. Snow shovels were big sellers, but worker Steve Edele said ice melt and salt were flying out the door.
"`Freaking out' is a great way of putting it," Edele said. "The icing — that's what scares people."
As the first flakes fell, transportation officials from Kansas City to Detroit readied storm-fighting equipment and some airlines encouraged travelers to rebook flights leaving from Chicago's major airports.
The National Weather Service, meanwhile, suggested any Green Bay Packers fans planning to road trip from Wisconsin to Dallas for the Super Bowl not leave before Wednesday afternoon, by which time authorities hope to have responded to the worst of the weather along the route.
For now, officials are urging residents in the storm's path to stay put.
"We don't like to stop for anything, weather or otherwise," said weather service meteorologist Edward Fenelon in Chicago. "But this may be one of those storms best handled from the comfort of the great indoors."
The weather service said the storm could drop up to an inch of freezing rain and issued a blizzard watch for Tuesday and Wednesday for southern Wisconsin, northern Illinois and northwest Indiana. Snow drifts of 5 feet to 10 feet were possible and the service said Tuesday that winds could reach up to 60 mph in open areas and near Lake Michigan.
Bitterly cold temperatures were forecast in the wake of the storm, with wind chills as cold as 40 degrees below zero possible for parts of North Dakota, South Dakota and other areas.
Dozens of day cares, community organizations, universities and school districts in Kansas and Missouri canceled classes Monday. Illinois lawmakers postponed a planned legislative session until next week and the 2011 Pork Expo in Peoria, Ill., was rescheduled for the middle of February.
The Oklahoma Blood Institute sought immediate blood donations, saying while its current supply is adequate, it could run low if the storm results in a significant slow-down in donations for a couple days.
Freezing drizzle coated roadways across the Plains. A school bus slid off the road in a south Kansas City, Mo., school district, slightly injuring two students. A Wisconsin state trooper was struck and seriously injured while directing traffic around another accident, while the Minnesota State Patrol reported more than 200 crashes statewide, including one authorities said was fatal.
Residents braced for the worse in St. Louis and throughout Missouri, with forecasters calling for a particularly hazardous and potentially deadly mix: Up to an inch of ice, followed by 3-4 inches of sleet, then perhaps a half-foot of snow or more.
Forecasters predicted between 12 inches and 16 inches of snowfall in Columbia, where the university's men's basketball team prepared to leave a day early for a road game at Oklahoma State University scheduled for Wednesday night in Stillwater.
St. Louis-based utility company Ameren opened its emergency operations center amid worries that the weight of the ice and snow could duplicate a severe crisis in 2006, when an ice storm downed thousands of trees and power lines. Parts of southeast Missouri were left without electricity for more than a week.
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels directed his state's Department of Homeland Security to coordinate preparations and his office was meeting with utility companies, local emergency agencies, the state highway department and National Guard.
After burying the Midwest, the storm was expected to sweep into the Northeast, parts of which already are on track for record snowfall this winter. In New Hampshire, where pedestrians have been forced to walk in the street in some places because of piled-up snow, crews rushed to remove it before a new foot or so fell on the state.

Fla. judge strikes down Obama health care overhaul
Image via Wikipedia
By MELISSA NELSON, Associated Press Melissa Nelson, Associated Press – 6 mins ago
PENSACOLA, Fla. – A federal judge ruled Monday that the Obama administration's health care overhaul is unconstitutional, siding with 26 states that sued to block it. U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson accepted without trial the states' argument that the new law violates people's rights by forcing them to buy health insurance by 2014 or face penalties.
Attorneys for the administration had argued that the states did not have standing to challenge the law and that the case should be dismissed.
The next stop is likely the U.S. Supreme Court. Two other federal judges have upheld the insurance requirement, but a federal judge in Virginia also ruled the insurance provision violates the Constitution.
In his ruling, Vinson went further than the Virginia judge and declared the entire health care law unconstitutional.
"This is obviously a very difficult task. Regardless of how laudable its attempts may have been to accomplish these goals in passing the Act, Congress must operate within the bounds established by the Constitution," Vinson wrote in his 78-page ruling.
At issue was whether the government is reaching beyond its constitutional power to regulate interstate commerce by requiring citizens to purchase health insurance or face tax penalties.
Attorneys for President Barack Obama's administration had argued that the health care system was part of the interstate commerce system. They said the government can levy a tax penalty on Americans who decide not to purchase health insurance because all Americans are consumers of medical care.
But attorneys for the states said the administration was essentially coercing the states into participating in the overhaul by holding billions of Medicaid dollars hostage. The states also said the federal government is violating the Constitution by forcing a mandate on the states without providing money to pay for it.
Florida's former Republican Attorney General Bill McCollum filed the lawsuit just minutes after Obama signed the 10-year, $938 billion health care bill into law in March. He chose a court in Pensacola, one of Florida's most conservative cities. The nation's most influential small business lobby, the National Federation of Independent Business, also joined.
Other states that joined the suit are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

LOVE AND FORGIVENESS!!!!!

YEARS AGO, I WAS TOLD BY A SUPERVISOR, THAT WE USUALLY ARE NICER TO STRANGERS THAN OUR OWN FAMILIES. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THIS IS TRUE. WE NEED TO GET BACK TO BASICS WITH OUR FAMILY MEMBERS. TELL YOUR FAMILY THAT YOU LOVE THEM, HUG THEM AND THEN ASK THEM FOR FORGIVENESS FOR ALL OF THE TIMES THAT YOU UPSET THEM, YELLED AT THEM, TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THEM. A DAY WILL COME WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE THEM AROUND ANYMORE AND IT WILL HURT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU TREATED THEM WORSE THAN A TOTAL STRANGER.
LOVE YOUR FAMILY!

Mom charged in kids' slayings treated at hospital
Play Video ABC News – Family Murders
By TAMARA LUSH, Associated Press Tamara Lush, Associated Press – Sat Jan 29, 9:47 pm ET
TAMPA, Fla. – The woman who authorities say killed her teenage daughter and son because she was fed up with them talking back and being mouthy did not appear in court Saturday because she was being treated at a hospital for an unknown condition.
Authorities say Julie Powers Schenecker was taken to Tampa General Hospital shortly after midnight Saturday to be treated for a medical condition that existed before she was taken to jail. Hillsborough Sheriff's deputies — who oversee jail inmates — said they could not reveal Schenecker's medical condition, citing health care privacy laws. A jail spokesman said late Saturday that Schenecker was still at the hospital and that her first court appearance was pending.
An arrest affidavit said Schenecker shot her son twice in the head in the family car "for talking back" as she drove him to soccer practice. The report said Schenecker then drove to their upscale home and shot her daughter in the face inside the home.
Schenecker's mother called police Friday morning, and told them she was concerned after her daughter had sent an e-mail saying she was depressed. Officers found Schenecker drenched in blood on her back porch — and once they saw the teens, the scene was so troubling that a stress team was called to counsel the responding officers, a police spokeswoman said.
Calyx, the girl, was 16 and a cross country running star at her high school. The 13-year-old son, Beau, was in eighth grade.
Investigators believe the teens "never saw it coming," said police spokeswoman Laura McElroy. Both were killed with a .38-caliber pistol. The arrest affidavit said the weapon was purchased five days earlier.
Schenecker's husband, Parker Schenecker, is a career Army officer attached to U.S. Central Command in Tampa. He was working in the Middle East when the shootings happened.
In 2008, the family moved to Tampa and bought a $448,000 home in a quiet, upscale suburban neighborhood. As the sun set Friday evening, residents walked by crime scene tape that sealed off the cul-de-sac that the Schenecker family lived on.
Neighbor Charanun Soodjinda said the Scheneckers "fit right in" when they arrived. The couple's two children often played in the cul-de-sac with other neighborhood kids, and Julie Schenecker seemed to be at home a lot.
"They seemed like a nice family," said Soodjinda, 38. "I never thought this would happen. How could you do that to your children?"
It was clear something had gone wrong: As police led Julie Schenecker to a patrol car Friday, she shook uncontrollably, her eyes wide and wild.
Before Friday's arrest, Schenecker had no criminal record in Florida. On Nov. 8, 2010, she was involved in a car crash in Tampa, according to records from the Florida Highway Patrol, and cited for careless driving.
The crash caused bodily injury and $26,500 of property damage, records show, but it does not explain who was injured or what property was damaged. Schenecker paid a $151 fine and attended traffic school, the report said.
The family appeared to be happy, at least according to friends — and they appeared to glow in photos posted online. The two teens were described as well-mannered by family friends. In several family portraits on Parker Schenecker's Facebook page, the four posed, smiling and relaxed.
"You all look so stunning and young. Did you find the fountain of youth and your not telling anyone!!!! WOW, you four look so good and healthy!!!" wrote one of Schenecker's friends on a dramatic black-and-white photo of the family.
Another photo shows the four in Santa hats. "What a great photo! You never disappoint! Your family is something to be proud of, look at how happy every one of you are!" a friend wrote in response.
Parker Schenecker also posted several photos of Calyx's cross country running team.
Julie Schenecker's Facebook page says she studied physical education at the University of Iowa. In May 2010, she posted a video of her husband; he appeared in a real estate company's video about looking for a home in Tampa.
She posted words of encouragement on her daughter's running photos, reminisced about skiing in Austria in the late '80s and added more than 400 friends.
On Aug. 24, she "liked" a link that read: "Be kinder than necessary, because everyone you meet is fighting some sort of battle.
YOU KNOW I HAVE 2 TEENAGERS AND THE YOUNGEST ONE CAN DO SOME BACK TALKING AND CAN BE VERY STUBBORN. MY MOM TELLS ME THIS IS NORMAL BECAUSE I USED TO BE THE SAME WAY. Teen says he put grand piano in Miami bay

In this Jan. 2, 2011 photo provided by Nicholas Harrington, Julian Kolevris-Roots, 18, is shown sitting at a piano on a sandbar in Miami's Biscayne Bay. Harrington, a 16-year-old looking to boost his college application, says he is responsible for putting a grand piano on a Biscayne Bay sandbar.Related Videos |
"I wanted to create a whimsical, surreal experience. It's out of the every day for the boater," Harrington told The Associated Press.
"I don't like it be considered as a prank," he said. "It's more of a movement."
On Jan. 2, Harrington, his older brother Andrew and two neighbors lifted the instrument, which had been trashed during a holiday party, onto the family's 22-foot boat and took it out on Biscayne Bay. There, they left it on the highest spot along a sandbar.
Harrington is the son of "Burn Notice" production designer J. Mark Harrington. The piano is an old movie prop that sat for four years in Harrington's grandmother's garage. The teen had talked about hoisting the instrument from a tree or using it in a music video, among other projects, his mother said, but nothing happened until the winter break from school.
The teen said he grew up in a family that appreciated art and architecture, and he had his parents' support for his scheme.
"The weirdness of it all just comes easily," he said.
The piano sat undisturbed in the bay until last week, when Suzanne Beard, a local resident, took her boat over to the sandbar to take a look. Her picture of pelicans roosting on the instrument ended up on the National Geographic website. From there, the story went viral, much to Harrington's surprise.
"We pretty much forgot about it until it became super popular," the teen said.
He said he had planned to remain anonymous -- except for including photos of the installation in his college application -- until others began claiming responsibility.
"I think it was much more powerful as a mystery," said the teen's mother, Annabel Harrington. "It put Miami on the map in a good way."
YOU GO BOY!!!!!

11 Officers Shot Over 24 Hours Causes Fear of 'War on Cops'
So far in 2011, 14 law enforcement officers have been killed, a trend that extends from 2010, which was one of the deadliest years on record, according to statistics released by the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund on Monday.
The uptick in attacks on officers prompted a police union spokesman to say field officers are concerned about a "war on cops."
Richard Roberts, spokesman for the International Union of Police Associations, told MSNBC, "It's not a fluke. There's a perception among officers in the field that there's a war on cops going on."
On Monday, three officers were shot — two fatally wounded, and one injured — while serving an aggravated battery warrant at a home in St. Petersburg, Fla. On Sunday, four officers were shot at a Detroit Police precinct; two Kitsap County (Wash.) Sheriff's deputies were shot at a Walmart while responding to a call reporting a suspicious person; and police officers in Indianapolis and Lincoln City, Ore., were critically injured in shootings during traffic stops.
As of Jan. 24, officer fatalities have been recorded in eight states, including multiple deaths in Florida (5), Texas (2), and Ohio (2). Florida and Texas were among the top five states leading officer deaths in 2010 (along with California, Illinois, and Georgia).
"The devastating spike in law enforcement officer fatalities in 2010 has tragically continued in the first month of 2011," according to Craig W. Floyd, chairman and CEO of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. "I have never seen anything like it. The violent events of the past 24 hours in Florida, Michigan, Indiana, Oregon and Washington have been detrimental to America's peace officers, taking the lives of two and injuring several others. We must do everything in our power to stop these senseless and heinous crimes against our law enforcement personnel."
According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund's preliminary "2010 End of Year Officer Fatality Report," officer fatalities reached 162, a nearly 40 percent increase from the 117 in 2009. Of the 162 officers killed in the line of duty, 61 were shot — a 24 percent increase from 2009. Tragically, the trend continued with 14 officer deaths in January, 10 of which resulted from shootings accounting for a 40 percent increase compared to the same period in 2010.
"As recent events show us, there is a more brazen criminal prowling the streets of America and our law enforcement officers responsible for protecting our communities are uniformed targets for these criminals," according to Floyd.
The following nine officers are the most recent gunfire-related fatalities:

- Rainier (Ore.) Police Chief Ralph Painter was killed by a fatal gunshot wound to the head on Jan. 5, while responding to a call reporting a car theft at a strip mall.
- Baltimore City (Md.) Police Officer William H. Torbit, Jr. was fatally shot during an altercation outside a night club on Jan. 9.
- Lakewood (N.J.) Patrolman Christopher Matlosz was shot and killed as he approached a suspect while patrolling a residential area on Jan. 14.
- Livonia (Mich.) Officer Larry Nehasil was fatally wounded by a burglary suspect during a shootout on Jan. 17.
- Miami-Dade (Fla.) Officers Roger Castillo and Amanda Haworth were fatally shot as they attempted to serve a murder warrant at a Miami, Florida home on Jan. 20.
- St. Petersburg (Fla.) Sgt. Tom Baitinger and Officer Jeffrey Yaslowitz were gunned down and killed while attempting to serve a warrant on Jan. 24. A U.S. Marshal was also wounded but is in stable condition.

Deaths could have been results of Carbon Monoxide!
http://www.wxii12.com/news/26593881/detail.html
This is so sad. All they needed in the unit was a carbon monoxide detector. People if you have gas heat, wood heat etc please get a detector. You can also get the ones that are smoke detectors as well. Save a life. Look out for you and your family member's.

RACISM! I'M SO TIRED OF IT.
I was just watching TV and a commercial comes on called "Blackpeoplemeet.com". Now this website says it is a black dating site for black people. Why does it have to be just for black people? Now if there was a website saying "Whitepeoplemeet.com" and it said it was just for white people to meet each other then the NAACP would be on them like white on rice. They would have them in court for promoting a website for white people only. They would also do the same thing if the website was "Spanishpeoplemeet.com". Why does everything in America have to be in color? Why can't it just be " Peoplemeetpeople.com"? Why does everything have to be about race? I am so tired of the racial issues this country still has. Our country likes to tell everyone about how racial issues are almost over with here in America but they are not. You still have racism(that goes both ways) in the workforce, schools, finance, etc. It is sickening. Why can't we all be treated the same? We have progressed in so many areas such as engineering, medical, computers, etc but we can't excel and progress in race relations. I have two beautiful bi-racial children and I am proud of them. But even I have been on the receiving end of racists both black and white. I just hope and pray that they will never have to deal with that.

Leading up to the SuperBowl!!!
Image via Wikipedia
Now people I just don't get this. Our men sit around and watch these playoffs every year so they can see if their team makes it to the Superbowl. If their favorite team doesn't make it then that's ok because they are going to watch the Superbowl anyways and root for someone else to win (Usually the team that is everyone's favorite to win). Now when the playoffs are over with then comes the Superbowl.
The Superbowl is one of the most exciting days in the lives of our men. They will have parties, go to sports bars or just plain watch it anywhere they can. They will have their favorite foods and ink by their side and when the game is on they will hear NOTHING their wives say to them because they are so engrossed with the game.
Well here is what I think should happen. I think that our husbands should save up all year long and give the money they save so their wives can go shopping and hang out with their girlfriends during this game. That would make everyone happy. Wives out shopping while husband are watching the game. Oh yeah and the kids should have to stay at home with the husbands watching the game. Also, for you women who want to stay home and
watch the game then go for it. That is your choice but if I am off of work on this day
then I think I am going out. Maybe my daughter and I will go hang out at the mall or have
a great dinner by ourselves while my husband is watching the Superbowl.
