Vanderbilt reviewing bloody mascot incident

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt officials are investigating how their mascot left a young man with a bloodied nose while crowd surfing through the student section.
Mr. Commodore moved through the students before coming down, first putting his hand on the young man's shoulder before knocking him in the face. Video on ESPN.com shows the incident during No. 18 Vanderbilt's 60-51 loss to instate rival Tennessee.
The young man stemmed the blood with newspaper, and assistant vice chancellor Brock Williams said Wednesday the student is fine.
School officials are trying to determine what happened. Williams says they will wait to decide whether to address stunts like crowd surfing. Vanderbilt's next home game is March 5 against Florida.
NOW THE MASCOTS ARE BEATING PEOPLE UP.

Analysis: Obama shifts stance on gay marriage

WASHINGTON — One way for President Barack Obama to win the future, it seems, is to have his administration stop defending a federal law that bans recognition of same-sex marriage.
    More on This
Opinion polls show a steady rise in Americans' embrace of gay rights, and young voters solidly back positions their grandparents opposed, including gay marriage.
"Anybody under the age of 40 doesn't care, or actively supports it," said Steve Elmendorf, a longtime Democratic staffer and lobbyist.
The administration said Wednesday it no longer would defend the constitutionality of the 1996 federal law that defines marriage as only between a man and a woman. Attorney General Eric Holder cited recent shifts in legal thought, not public opinion, in explaining the decision.
"Much of the legal landscape has changed in the 15 years since Congress passed" the Defense of Marriage Act, Holder said. He noted that the Supreme Court has ruled that laws criminalizing homosexual conduct are unconstitutional and that Congress has repealed the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which barred service by openly gay men and women.
Five or so years ago, Obama's decision might have touched off fierce Republican criticisms. But reaction Wednesday was comparatively sparse and muted from mainstream GOP groups and individuals. Most of the Republicans weighing a presidential bid were silent, as was Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
One exception was former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, an evangelical minister who is considering a second try for the presidency.
"I think it was an absolutely boneheaded political move, and I think it was a boneheaded policy move," Huckabee said in an interview. He said Obama seems to say, "I don't answer to the voters."
At least 30 states have held referendums on the issue, Huckabee said, and "without exception, when the voters decide, they always decide to affirm marriage" between a man and woman.
Thirty states have constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. Same-sex marriage is legal in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and the District of Columbia. The 1996 law prevents the federal government from recognizing gay marriages and allows states to deny recognition of same-sex unions performed elsewhere.
Over the years, Obama has criticized the federal law without fully supporting gay marriage. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday that Obama was still "grappling" with his view on the matter but had always personally opposed the Defense of Marriage Act as "unnecessary and unfair."
Public opinion on gay rights has shifted substantially in recent years. An October poll by the Pew Research Center found that 42 percent of adults favored same-sex marriage, while 48 percent opposed. A year earlier, it was 37 percent in favor and 54 percent opposed.
Pluralities of white mainline Protestants and white Catholics favored same-sex marriage for the first time in the Pew surveys' history, and the issue ranked at the bottom of voters' concerns in the 2010 elections.

'Deadliest Catch' crew member found dead in motel

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A member of the hit cable TV show "Deadliest Catch" fishing crew has been found dead in an Alaska motel room, police said Wednesday.
Justin Tennison, who worked on the Time Bandit, one of the vessels on the popular Discovery Channel reality series that depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska, was found dead Tuesday afternoon in Homer, authorities said.
Beer, hard liquor and a small amount of marijuana were found in the room, Homer police Lt. Randy Rosencrans said. Police believe a party was held in the room on Monday night _ two rooms were registered under Tennison's name and nearby guests complained about the noise.
The 33-year-old Tennison is set to make a posthumous debut in the series' seventh season, which is scheduled to begin in April, Discovery spokesman Josh Weinberg said.
"Justin was tough as a bull and was an all-around good hand," a statement posted on the Time Bandit's official website said.
Weinberg also released a statement, saying Discovery was saddened by the news.
"We send our sympathies to his entire family and fellow crew members during this most difficult time," the statement said.
TMZ previously reported that Tennison had died.
The cause of death was unknown Wednesday afternoon and foul play isn't suspected, Rosencrans said. An autopsy by the state medical examiner's office was scheduled to take place later Wednesday.
The death comes a little more than year after Capt. Phil Harris of the "Deadliest Catch" fishing vessel Cornelia Marie died following a massive stroke at age 53.

WE ARE TAKING AWAY OUR CHILDREN'S CHILDHOOD AND MAKING THEM GROW UP FASTER THEN THEY NEED TO JUST SO THEY CAN GET AHEAD IN LIFE BUT IT NOW LOOKS LIKE THEIR WON'T BE ANY JOBS BY THE TIME THEY FINISH SCHOOL. THE UNITED STATES DEFICIT IS NOW $14 TRILLION DOLLARS AND THEY KEEP ADDING ON TO IT. NEEDLESS TO SAY IF WE FILED BANKRUPTCY WE WOULD BE OWNED BY CHINA AND OUR NATIONAL LANGUAGE WOULD BE CHINESE.

NOW TO CURE ALL OF THIS DRAMA. LET THE DRAMA GO. IF YOU MARRY SOMEONE EITHER LOVE THEM OR LET THEM GO. IF YOU ARE UNHAPPY TELL YOUR SPOUSE AND GO YOUR SEPARATE WAYS OR HOW ABOUT TRYING TO FIX YOUR MARRIAGE. UNDERSTAND THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT PERFECT AND ACCEPT THEM FOR WHO THEY ARE. START SAYING THANK YOU AS MUCH AS YOU SAY I LOVE YOU TO PEOPLE. INSTEAD OF STABBING EACH OTHER IN THE BACK AT WORK, STICK TOGETHER. BE HAPPY FOR OTHERS WHO GET AHEAD AND REALIZE IT'S JUST NOT YOUR TIME YET, STOP TRYING TO BRING PEOPLE DOWN.
WE CAN FIX OUR EVERYDAY PROBLEMS AND MAYBE OUR GOVERNMENT WILL FIX THEIR PROBLEMS.

Lindsay Lohan's No-Win Day in Court

In the latest twist in Lindsay Lohan's necklace-stealing, grand-theft debacle, a judge told the troubled starlet: Take a plea deal, and I'll toss you in jail. Christine Pelisek reports.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge tersely told 'Mean Girls' actress Lindsay Lohan Wednesday  that he'll toss her in jail if she decides to take a plea deal offer by prosecutors.

Judge Keith Schwartz said Lohan, who was stylishly dressed in a low-cut black blouse and beige high-waisted trousers, her hair pulled back in a ponytail, would have to plead guilty or no contest to charges that she stole a $2,500 necklace from a trendy jewelry boutique in Venice Beach. It's unclear what the plea deal offered by prosecutors entails.
"This case does involve jail time -- period," said Schwartz. "If you plead guilty in front of me -- if this case resolves in front of me -- You are going to jail. Period. There may be an issue with how much time."
If Lohan decides against the prosecutors deal, the case will be set for a preliminary hearing with another judge. Lohan must make her decision by her next court date on March 10. Schwartz said he suspects that Lohan and her attorney, Shawn Holley, will reject the deal.
According to the judge, all of the police evidence, including surveillance footage and police reports, were handed over to Holley before the 8:30 a.m. hearing.
During the short hearing, Schwartz said he plans to treat Lohan like any other defendant in his courtroom. "I treat everyone the same," he said. "I don't care if you are Lindsay Lohan...I don't want you to be a repeat offender. I want you to move on in your life and quit causing yourself and family additional stress that is not necessary."
Schwartz said that Lohan should receive psychological counseling to help her cope with "stressors" and a trustworthy sponsor -- not a member of her family -- who will not be "moved by anything other than seeing you succeed."
"You need someone who will help you stay away from substance abuse issues and alcohol issues and help you get on track to be a productive citizen and reach the potential you have," he said.
    "Do you understand?" he asked.
"Yes, your honor," replied Lohan, quietly sifting through court papers.
Lindsay's father, Michael, who was sitting in the front row sandwiched between the owners of Inspirations for Youth and Families, a teen rehab clinic where he works as a consultant, told The Daily Beast that Lohan should not take a deal.
"[Store staff] gave her a necklace to wear and promote and when it showed up in the paper after three days and the store wasn't mentioned they got pissed off and reported it stolen," he said.
Lohan, who said his daughter was at the store with two other friends who plan to testify on her behalf if the case goes to court, claimed that the police report of the incident gave three different accounts of what happened. He also claimed that he had a witness who saw the same "one of a kind" necklace on sale at the same store for $800, which would make the charge a misdemeanor petty theft and not a felony. "It was a misunderstanding," he said. "I think the value of the necklace was trumped up. The whole situation is trumped up. She has worked hard on her recovery. It saddens me...The truth is going to come out and she will be vindicated."
Lohan arrived at the airport courthouse with her mother, Dina, and her brother, Michael Jr. Lohan's parents, who did not acknowledge each other in the courtroom, sat five seats from each other. After the court hearing, Michael Lohan became enraged when his ex-wife allegedly told a bailiff to stop him from getting on the elevator with her and Lindsay. "She is evil," he barked.

SO IF SHE PLEADS GUILTY SHE IS GOING TO JAIL. SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF HER. OH WELL, GUESS SHE SHOULDN'T HAVE STOLEN THE NECKLACE. JUST SAYING................
