ROYAL WEDDING - 1981

History in the making: Kate, William ready to wed

A member of the public in fancy dress stands alongside a police officer as crowds of people throng to central London to celebrate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in London Friday, April, 29, 2011.
LONDON — From Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, royal fans lined the streets of London by the tens of thousands Friday, hoping to snatch a glimpse of history as Prince William weds Kate Middleton in a marriage expected to revive Britain's beleaguered monarchy.
A third of the planet was forecast to be watching as the future king and queen of England start their lives as husband and wife with the two simple words "I will," ending months of buildup and sealing their love with the most public of spectacles.
All the clamoring over every detail _ the wedding dress, her hair, her title, the romantic kiss on the Buckingham Palace balcony, the honeymoon _ finally will be answered. But the biggest question of all won't be answered for years: Is this one royal couple who will live happily ever after?
Will their union endure like that of Williams' grandparents _ Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, now in its 64th year _ or crumble in a spectacular and mortifying fashion like that of his own parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana?
Recent history augurs badly: The first marriages of three of the queen's four children ended in divorce. But the couple's chemistry brings confidence that this one will work.
William and Kate look fantastic together, seeming to glow with happiness in each other's company, and unlike Charles and Diana they've had eight years to figure out that they want to be together.
But the fate of their marriage will depend on private matters impossible for the public to gauge. A beautiful bridal gown, an eye-popping sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring do not guarantee a happy ending. Any wedding is fundamentally about two people. Will their lives together, starting with such high hopes, be blessed by good fortune, children, good health, productive work?
Much will depend on whether 28-year-old William and 29-year-old Kate can summon the things every couple needs to make a marriage work: patience, love, wit and wisdom. But they face pressures most of the world doesn't: the twin burdens of fame and scrutiny. Money, power, beauty _ it can all go wrong if not carefully nurtured.
These are the thorny issues upon which the fate of the monarchy rests, as the remarkable queen, now 85, inevitably ages and declines.
With just hours to go, dedicated royal watchers camped outside got an unexpected surprise _ a visit from Prince William. The groom-to-be emerged from his residence Thursday night to greet the hordes of well-wishers gathered along the processional route. Dressed in khakis and grinning broadly, William shook countless hands as his photo was snapped on cell phones and digital cameras.

Royal wedding eve: Rehearsals, music, thanks
(AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth)
A policeman directs pedestrians near Westminster Abbey in London, Thursday, April 28, 2011. Royal enthusiasts are camping out on the pavement to reserve a spot to watch Prince William and Kate Middleton as they arrive to marry in Westminster Abbey on Friday, April 29.
LONDON — Practice makes perfect: Kate Middleton and her bridesmaids, together with best man Prince Harry, rehearsed one more time at Westminster Abbey on Thursday, the eve of the most anticipated royal wedding in decades.
But politics intruded on Friday's royal nuptials, with Britain withdrawing its invitation to Syria's ambassador to condemn the violent crackdown on protesters there that has left hundreds dead.
The rehearsal came as Middleton and Prince William released their wedding program, which says they have been deeply touched by an outpouring of affection toward them.
"We are both so delighted that you are able to join us in celebrating what we hope will be one of the happiest days of our lives," they wrote. "The affection shown to us by so many people during our engagement has been incredibly moving, and has touched us both deeply."
They also released a new photograph by celebrity photographer Mario Testino -- a warm black-and-white image.
Much is at stake for the royal family, who hope the match bolsters the Windsor dynasty and smooths over memories of the damaging, embarrassing divorce of William's parents, Princess Diana and Prince Charles. William has often referred to his late mother with great affection, and gave Kate his mother's engagement ring -- ensuring she isn't forgotten during the sacred occasion.
The ceremony will offer pomp and circumstance on a scale to rival Charles and Diana's fairy-tale wedding in 1981, with 1,900 invited guests and royal carriages drawn by mounted troops of the Household Calvary. Rows of bold red, white and blue Union Jacks have been unfurled in the streets and cleaners have scrubbed the parade route.
Tens of thousands of people are expected to line the twisting path from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace, where the new royal couple will appear on the balcony for a kiss watched by millions around the world.
Westminster Abbey itself has been transformed into a blooming forest, with six field maples and two hornbeams lining the aisle leading up to the altar.
Dozens of die-hard fans were already camped out in tents and sleeping bags Thursday near the iconic landmark. Among them was India Marlow-Prince, a 17-year-old from London who was picnicking with friends. The trio painted their faces with the Union Jack and wore tiaras and matching hot pink T-shirts with the homemade slogan "Will and Kate forever."
"She is the Diana of our generation. And Wills is a babe," Marlow-Prince said. "We are a little annoyed at her for taking him, but there's always Harry."
The wedding presents a major security challenge for the 5,000 police officers on duty, who will be on the lookout for Irish dissident terrorists, Muslim extremists, anti-monarchists, protesters and hooligans. A wide range of police will be on patrol: officers on motorcycles, escort specialists, dog handlers, search officers, mounted police, protection officers and firearms units.
Scotland Yard Police Commander Christine Jones said there has been no new terror threat but considerable Internet chatter. "Our operation has been meticulously planned, and we have thought through and planned for a huge range of contingencies," she said.
But it wouldn't be a wedding without a tussle over the guest list. Britain revoked a royal wedding invitation to Syrian Ambassador Sami Khiyami because of violent attacks on protesters by the regime there.
More than 450 people have been killed since mid-March in the uprising against President Bashar Assad's authoritarian regime, with 120 dead over the weekend.

Secret shame: Paula Deen
Paula Deen 'hides diabetes from fans while continuing to promote high-fat recipes'
Paula Deen has allegedly been suffering from Type 2 diabtes which she contracted due to her 'high-fat diet'
But sadly for acclaimed chef Paula Deen, it is these very things that are said to have led her to battle with a deadly disease.
For the bubbly, plus-size celebrity cook has allegedly been diagnosed with diabetes.
According to the National Enquirer, friends of the Food Network star has kept the life-threatening illness a secret from her fans.
Georgia-born Deen is known for her rich and unhealthy Southern-style cooking which started out as a catering service which her sons Jamie and Bobbie delivered from their home and has grown into her own range of deserts, restaurants and star of her own show on the Food Network.
According to the National Enquirer, friends of the 64-year-old said she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes several years ago, yet continues to tout exactly the type of butter or sugar rich high-fat recipes that bring on diabetes.
She is said to be under doctor's orders to steer clear of the foods.
Leading endocrinologist Dr Daniel Lorber said: 'Diabetes can be deadly because it increases your risk of heart disease, kidney failure and stroke.
'And Type 2 diabetes can be directly related to obesity, which is reaching epidemic proportions in this country.'
Trademark: It is unhealthy burgers like these that made Paula a household name but may have given her diabetes
INGREDIENTS OF PAULA'S BRUNCH BURGER
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
3 tablespoons freshly chopped parsley leaves
2 tablespoons grated onion
2 tablespoons butter
3 eggs
6 slices bacon, cooked
3 hamburger buns
3 English muffins
6 glazed donuts
3 tablespoons freshly chopped parsley leaves
2 tablespoons grated onion
2 tablespoons butter
3 eggs
6 slices bacon, cooked
3 hamburger buns
3 English muffins
6 glazed donuts
One of Deen's most famous dishes is the Lady's Brunch Burger, which is a hamburger topped with bacon and a fried egg and served on a glazed donut.
Her devastation at allegedly being diagnosed with diabetes went further than her career - the friend told the Enquirer that she simply loves to eat high-fat, high-calorie foods.
The source said: 'At first she resisted doctor's orders to drastically change her diet, but eventually she realised that if she didn't it would put her into an early grave.'
Her health conscious husband Michael Groover is said to have helped to persuade Paula to change her ways, added the source.
Fun-loving: Deen is known for her bubbly, larger-than-life persona and her love of sugar and fat-loaded recipes
'Hopefully she'll come clean to her fans,' the source said. 'Paula is so popular that her honesty could help people change their lives.'

Top 5 controversial Royal Wedding invitees
New York – The inclusion of an African king, a Bahraini prince and Kate Middleton's bawdy uncle raises eyebrows and even incites protest
As we know all too well, the Royal Wedding is far bigger, bolder, and more inflated than your average nuptials — and so is the debate over certain questionable guests. While world leaders like President Obama and former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown are notably not among the 1,900 people invited, the inclusion of Middle Eastern royalty and billionaires with ties to late South American dictators is sparking controversy. Here, some of the most disputed nods:
1. Prince Salman bin Hamad al-Khalifa of Bahrain
Bahrain's Crown Prince scored an invite, but, after threatened protests by human rights activists, had to change his RSVP to a "no." As many as 31 pro-democracy demonstrators have been killed in Bahrain, and protesters say the prince is the "chief architect" of security forces' brutal response to the demonstrations. "We would like to see the British government fully condemn what is going on — not invite people to a wedding who have blood on their hands," says Nabeel Rajab, the president of the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights.
2. King Mswati III of Swaziland
The African king lives a lavish life in a notoriously poor nation and has a curious approach to matrimony: He holds a yearly dance where he selects a new wife (he already has 13) from thousands of topless virgins. His attendance at the more traditional Royal Wedding is provoking outrage: "Whilst the king and his entourage party in luxury in London, the people of Swaziland are being pushed deeper into poverty and those who speak out face arrest and even torture," says Tony Dykes, director of Action for Southern Africa. The British government might say they invited him because of protocol, but "if so, they are putting protocol before human rights."
3. American media tycoon Joe Allbritton
Critics accuse Prince Charles of inviting the 86-year-old media mogul, who's been linked to Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet and his murderous regime, simply because he owes Allbritton for transportation services rendered. The father of the groom has borrowed Allbritton's Gulfstream jet for private use in the past, and plans to use it next month to fly to Washington for an official visit. It will reportedly be the first time a private individual has funded a state trip. "Accepting hospitality from controversial American billionaires is normally the preserve of [Charles'] younger brother Prince Andrew," says Fay Schlesinger in the Daily Mail.
4) Gary Goldsmith, Kate Middleton's wayward uncle
Reportedly, royal aides had hoped the future princess' "black sheep" uncle would only attend the ceremony, but it seems he's also been invited to the reception despite legitimate concerns over his bad-boy ways. Goldsmith, 45, was caught on camera two years ago cutting up what looked to be cocaine and boasting about his in with the Windsors. When hanging with Will and Kate, the wealthy property developer, who splits his time between London and Ibiza, has been known to act crudely.
5) Prince William's exes
Before there was Kate, there was Isabella (now an actress), Arabella (a Gucci PR rep), Jecca (a party events manager), Olivia (an Edinburgh University grad), Rose (the prince's first girlfriend)... and all of them are reportedly invited to the wedding. Perhaps in the interest of gender equality, two of Kate's exes, Willem Marx and Rupert Finch, are also said to be on the guest list.
WILLIAM NOT TO SMART ON INVITING THE EX'S/ TRYING TO GET A QUICKIE BEFORE THE CEREMONY OR BETWEEN THE CEREMONY AND RECEPTION. TACKY!
WILL KATE WEAR THE QUEEN'S TIARA?
Royal tiara: A bet has been placed that Kate Middleton will wear the Queen's George III diamond tiara for her wedding. The Queen is pictured right wearing the tiara at her wedding. It was also worn by the Queen Mother and Princess Anne
One bookmaker in Ascot yesterday refused to take the woman's £6,000 bet, convinced that she had inside information.
Her gamble, thought to be the largest on the Royal Wedding so far, has driven Ladbrokes to stop taking bets on what Miss Middleton will wear on her head on Friday.
A spokesman for Ladbrokes said: 'When someone walks in off the street and places a bet like that alarm bells start ringing. We have very strong suspicions that this is what she will be wearing on Friday.
Passed down: The Queen Mother also leant the diamond tiara to Princess Anne for her wedding to Captain Mark Phillips in 1973
The tiara was made in 1919 for Queen Mary (left) who gave it to her daughter-in-law, the new Queen (right) , in 1937. She went on to become the Queen Mother
'It was a lady, not the kind of person you'd see in a betting shop on any day of the week let alone a bank holiday .
'Asking for a bet in this market is very unusual, asking for a bet of £6,000 is unheard of.'
The George III tiara was made in 1830 as a necklace with diamonds belonging to King George III.
It was inherited by Queen Mary, for whom it was turned into a tiara and in turn given to the Queen Mother.
Something borrowed: The Queen wears the tiara at her wedding in 1947. She almost broke it after it was lent to her by the Queen Mother
But the court jeweller, under police guard, was able to repair it in time.
She loaned it to the Queen as 'something borrowed' for her wedding to Prince Phillip in 1947.
The Queen Mother loaned it again to Princess Anne for her 1973 marriage to Captain Mark Phillips.
Queen Victoria first wore the George III diamonds on a visit to the Royal Opera in 1839.
SHE BETTER WEAR IT OR THE QUEEN WILL HAVE HER ARSE!!!!!ROFLMBO HAHAHAH

New Eating Disorders: Are They For Real?
Ms. Hill isn’t alone. New findings indicate that there may be hundreds, if not thousands, of adult picky eaters. To get a handle on the numbers, Duke University and the University of Pittsburgh have launched a national public registry of adult picky eaters. Respected publications like JAMA and Psychology Today are recognizing another new eating disorder, orthorexia, an obsession with healthy eating. That may not sound bad, as obsessions go, but those who carry good intentions too far can face serious risks.
Eat the right foods to keep your bones strong.
Kristie Rutzel, 27, dropped to 68 pounds when she was in the grip of her fixation on healthy eating - at one point she ate little more than raw broccoli and cauliflower. Neither adult picky eating disorder nor orthorexia is included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), the American Psychiatric Association’s “bible” of mental disorders. Once a disorder is listed, treatment is often covered by insurance and it’s easier for researchers to get grants to study it. Here’s what we know so far:
- What is Adult Selective Eating? Like kids, adult picky eaters limit themselves to an extremely narrow range of foods. Unlike those who suffer from anorexia nervosa or bulimia, adult picky eaters are seemingly not worried about calorie counts or body image. But so far, researchers don’t know if adult picky eaters just haven’t outgrown childhood patterns or if their eating habits are a new twist on obsessive compulsive disorder. Some may be “supertasters,” with an abnormally acute sense of taste that turns them off certain foods. Many appear to have had unpleasant childhood associations with food.
- What is orthorexia? Identified in 1997 by Colorado physician Steven Bratman, MD, orthorexia is Latin for “correct eating.” Here, too, the focus isn’t on losing weight. Instead, sufferers increasingly restrict their diets to foods they consider pure, natural and healthful. Some researchers say that orthorexia may combine a touch of obsessive compulsive disorder with anxiety and warn that severely limited “healthy” diets may be a stepping stone to anorexia nervosa, the most severe - and potentially life-threatening - eating disorder.
- Adult picky eaters: Food preferences tend to be bland, white or pale colored - plain pasta or cheese pizza are said to be common foods along with French fries and chicken fingers. Some picky eaters stick to foods with a common texture or taste.
- Orthorexics: Those affected may start by eliminating processed foods, anything with artificial colorings or flavorings as well as foods that have come into contact with pesticides. Beyond that, orthorexics may also shun caffeine, alcohol, sugar, salt, wheat and dairy foods. Some limit themselves to raw foods.
What are the risks?
- Health consequences: Limiting your diet to only a few foods - because you’re a picky eater or have a long list of foods you deem unhealthy - can lead to potentially dangerous nutritional deficiencies. At its most extreme, a diet limited to only a few foods perceived to be healthy is described as orthorexia nervosa and can lead to the same emaciation and health risks seen with anorexia nervosa.
- Social Isolation: Being an adult picky eater can take an enormous social toll. Out of embarrassment, these folks avoid dining with friends or co-workers. Heather Hill tries to hide her eating habits from her children for fear that they will pick them up. Going to extremes in an effort to eat only healthy foods can also be socially isolating and can undermine personal relationships.
- Adult Selective Eating: Techniques that have proven successful in treating kids who are picky eaters - learning assertiveness skills and systematically trying new foods - are being used on adults, but it’s still too soon to know whether they work.
- Orthorexia: Cognitive behavior therapy designed to change obsessive thought patterns regarding food is usually recommended.
