Fleeing Suspect Who Can't Swim Called For Deputies To Help


A man who was running away from deputies last Wednesday jumped into the Dan River in a final act of desperation, but ended up calling to deputies to save him because he couldn't swim, Caswell County deputies said Tuesday.Deputies said the chase started at about 7:21 when officers were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person trying to get into a vehicle at a business on Shady Grove Road. When officers arrived, the spotted Talib-Diyn Aziz, 34, get into a vehicle and drive away.Deputies said they gave chase, with speeds reaching more than 100 mph as Aziz sped toward Virginia, weaving in and out of traffic.At one point he almost struck an oncoming vehicle, deputies said.The chase finally ended when the right front tire on the vehicle blew and the vehicle struck a boulder near the Dan River Park in Danville, Va.After deputies pulled Aziz from the water he was arrested and is facing charges in North Carolina of fleeing to elude arrest, aggressive driving, failure to stop at a stop sign or a flashing red light.Deputies said further investigation recovered burglary tools which led to Aziz being charged with misdemeanor larceny.He is awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
