LETTERS TO THE EDITOR OF STOKES COUNTY NEWSPAPER!!!!!!

Constitution doesn’t prohibit flying Christian flag

Dear Editor,

I am sad to say that the liberal left (ACLU) again has lashed out at Christianity and those who stand for it. Even though I do not agree with the removal of the Christian flag, I do understand why it was done. The ACLU has a tremendous amount of money backing their continued attempt at stripping America of its Christian and moral values. The City of King does not. I know the city leaders did not want to make this decision but logistically had no choice.

I challenge anyone who reads this to find the words "Separation of Church and State" in our Constitution. You will not find them for they are not there. In a letter written by Thomas Jefferson, dated 1802, Jefferson writes, "I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State."

The First Amendment reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Now with all that said, please explain how the flying of the Christian flag is the government invoking any beliefs on any particular of people. The Christian flag represents different groups that would fall under the category of Christians. It does not pertain to any particular denomination. I see nothing in the Constitution that would prevent the flying of the Christian Flag.

My understanding of the First Amendment is that we have freedom of religion and that the government will not establish a State church which is what those who settled America were running from in England. They wanted freedom to worship as they wished. If NASCAR wanted to fly a flag to honor our veterans would those who do not like NASCAR go to the ACLU to have it taken down or if a beer company wanted to honor our veterans would the ACLU be contacted? What if the NAACP wanted to fly a flag to honor those veterans? Would the ACLU then be contacted to have it taken down?

All that can be said is simply that those who fall under the Christian flag want to honor those who gave their all for our country so that we have freedoms to speak, demonstrate, write, etc. such as I am doing now. At no time when visiting the Memorial have I seen any City leader attempting to force their beliefs on anyone.

ACLU, please tell where you get your basis for this case. Could it be that you are afraid of what Christians stand for? Hey, why doesn't the ACLU put up a flag to honor these veterans and all veterans because they died so you may have the freedom to practice your style of legal representation? There are countries that if you spoke out with your legal representation, you might be punished. I still do not believe that you have any basis for your case, and that is based on the Constitution as it was written and not your interpretation.

I want to say thank you to all those who have given their lives and for those who defend my freedom today and thanks to your families for they, too, suffer a great loss.

God Bless America.

Jim Adams

King
