Just before the highly publicized case of former Stokes County NAACP President Larry Alexander Lash went to trial last week, there was an unexpected turn of events. Lash, 55, suddenly pleaded guilty to all charges shortly before his Superior Court case was scheduled to begin last week. There was no plea bargain or offer presented by Lash’s lawyer, James Quander of Winston-Salem--simply a “guilty as charged” plea.

Lash was arrested in July 2009 at his Walnut Cove home and charged with several sexual offenses such as six counts of statutory rape or sexual offense, two counts of intercourse and sexual offenses with certain victims, two counts of first degree sexual offense and two counts of incest.

When officers from the Stokes County Sheriff’s Department arrested Lash at that time, they also found five firearms and multiple rounds of ammunition at his residence. This resulted in an additional charge for Lash—possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

After Lash’s surprising admission on Monday, Oct. 11, all that was left was his sentencing. Superior Court Judge Anderson Cromer presided and gave Lash six consecutive sentences. It was determined that Lash would spend a minimum of 2,016 months (168 years) and a maximum of 2,478 months (206 years) in prison.

According to Tom Langan, the assistant district attorney for Stokes and Surry counties, Lash will not be eligible for parole. “There’s really no parole as we knew it in the past,” Langan explained, adding that judges now give minimum and maximum sentences instead.

Lash could trim years off the maximum sentence by exemplary behavior, e.g., but he cannot go below the minimum. Even if he served the minimum time, he would be 223 years old before he could be released.

“The length of Lash’s prison sentence is commensurate to the enormity of his crimes,” Langan commented.

Langan acted as second chair in the prosecution of the case, assisting District Attorney Ricky Bowman. They were involved when Lash was given a probable cause hearing several months ago. Two of his victims, both of whom had been abused for a long period of time, testified at that hearing. Their testimonies of sexual abuse by Lash resulted in the finding of probable cause.

At that point, the case was sent to the grand jury to whom law enforcement officials presented the findings on Lash. Per routine, Bowman and Langan were not allowed at this private hearing. The decision was made by the grand jury to indict Lash which meant he would face a full-blown trial.

However, Lash’s guilty plea last week made the trial unnecessary.

Lash has spent the last 15 months in the Stokes County Jail under a $1.5 million bond, one of the highest Stokes County Sheriff’s Department officials say they can recall in the county. Lash now has been transferred to Raleigh’s Central Prison, where he is undergoing processing. Langan says that Lash will spend time alone while officials make sure he is not suicidal before placing him in the regular prison environment.
