Dr Oz said that a major risk factor for getting a heart attack is cholesterol. So, Doctor Oz gave 5 ways to lower your cholesterol. His Assistant-Of-The-Day, Ramona from seat 3, said that she does not remember her cholesterol levels but she does remember that they are perfect. Dr Oz told her that if you can remember how much money is in your bank account, why wouldn’t you memorize your cholesterol level which is much more important than how much money you have?
Dr Oz: Lower Cholesterol
Here are five ways to lower your cholesterol:
Dr Oz: Lose Belly Fat to Lower Cholesterol
Dr Oz said that it is important to lower your belly fat, because belly fat is a big issue since it sends
chemicals to your liver, which irritate your liver. And when your liver gets irritated, it produces more lousy cholesterol or LDL Cholesterol.
Dr Oz: Exercise Lowers Cholesterol
Dr Oz said that you should exercise every day, even just walking for 20 minutes, because this can also help to lower your cholesterol.
Dr Oz: Fruits & Vegetables Lower Cholesterol
Dr Oz said that fruits and vegetables are wholesome foods that help you to naturally drop your cholesterol levels. If you are a woman, you should aim to eat 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
Dr Oz: Fiber Lowers Cholesterol
Dr Oz said that fiber helps you to reduce your cholesterol. How much fiber should you eat daily? 25 grams of fiber! But the average American only eats 15 grams of fiber. Dr Oz said that you need 6 apples to get 25 grams of fiber. As a side note, we also learned today that Dr Oz can juggle – what a multi-talented man! Dr Oz said that if you eat 4 cups of lettuce, 4 cups of mushrooms, 2 cups of tomatoes and 1 cup of chopped onion, you still are not quite to 25 grams of fiber. So of course you have to also have whole grains in your diet. Oatmeal is a great whole grain to eat in the morning. 1 cup of oatmeal has 4 grams of fiber. Dr Oz said that fiber can cause stomach cramps though if you go from eating a bad diet to suddenly eating a good diet. So you want to gradually increase the amount of fiber that you eat by 5 grams extra per week.
Dr Oz: Psyllium Fiber Lowers Cholesterol
Dr Oz said that by eating 1 tsp of Psyllium Fiber every day, you help your body to lower its cholesterol. When you eat something with fat in it along with Psyllium Fiber, the fat gets dissolved by the Psyllium so your body does not absorb it. Since 1 tsp of Psyllium Fiber has 3 grams of fiber, you want to gradually build-up to having 3 tsp of Psyllium Fiber per day (so one at each meal).
