AT LEAST 9 DEAD AFTER POSSIBLE TORNADOS


From viewer Matthew Scofield.RALEIGH— There were numerous reports of tornado sightings and touchdowns throughout the Raleigh area Saturday afternoon. Meteorologists had trained weather spotter reports of brick buildings destroyed in the southeast area of Raleigh.
Tornadoes will not likely be confirmed until the National Weather Service surveys the damage Sunday.
Part of the roof of the Mason Corporation, a company that produces aluminum products, was completely ripped off. Trees littered roadways and pipes were busted.
Residential homes suffered damage as well due to fallen trees and flying debris. Numerous reports of downed power lines were reported, which emergency officials cautioned all residents to stay clear of any seen in their area.
The most severe damage is in the areas of:
· South Saunders Street near Western Boulevard and I-40;
· Stony Brook mobile home park;
· Neighborhoods surrounding Shaw University;
· Buffalo Road and New Hope Road area, and;
· Yonkers Road area.
At least seven deaths in Wake, Cumberland, Lee and Bladen counties have been blamed on the storm.
The City of Raleigh is providing temporary shelter two Parks and Recreation Department facilities. The shelters are located at: Sanderford Road Park 2623 Sanderford Road and Millbrook Exchange Community Center, 1905 Spring Forest Road. The temporary shelters will be open until Wake County establishes shelter at Heritage High School, 1150 Forestville Road, Wake Forest. Those seeking shelter should bring everything they need to be comfortable, including bedding, medications and food that does not need preparation while at the shelter. No pets will be allowed.
